Interview with David Koepp

Great news! For our first episode of “Making the Film,” we will be interviewing David Koepp (the writer of Spider Man, Panic Room, Mission Impossible and most recently Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.)

We thought it’d be great to ask him the questions you guys would like to see answered, so if you have something you’d like us to ask Mr. Koepp, post it in the comments of this blog and we will add them to our list of questions.

P.S. Only screenwriting questions please.

How was it like working on the Jurassic Park films? Can you give us any details about the films that we may not know?

Hi,
I read your bulletin and it sounds like a great idea!

I would have a question:
"If they will do another Indiana Jones movie, have they ever thought of giving Marion a bigger part in the movies?"
I really think she deserves it, she's one of my favorite characters.=) It would be great if you could ask Mr Koepp.^^

What is your next big plan for a movie that will shake the ages?

Your upcoming film, Ghost Town, shares a few similarities with Peter Jackson's The Frighteners. Was that film any inspiration to your script or is it just a coincidence?

I have a question for Mr. Koepp

Who's idea was it to have Shia LaBeouf play Mutt Williams? Lucas or Spielberg? Or Somebody else?

I recently saw the new Indiana Jones movie and loved it. Did you have to write differently for Harrison Ford? He looked great and I can't believe he is 65 years old. Is his son going to be taking over in the next movie? I'd hate to see Harrison Ford retired at any age.

What number draft was the screenplay by shooting day 1?

How long did it take you to write it?

How many pages was the completed draft?

For first time writers attempting to get their film produced, what is the best way to make sure someone doesn't steal you idea or script?

For first time screenwriters, if producing your own film, how is the best way to attach an actor to the script?

Is there anyway you would have time to read, critique, help produce, a script that passed a coverage test?

Thank you so much for your time! Please answer any or all of the questions at your earliest convenience!

here's my question:

"Mr. Koepp, can you please elaborate on why did you choose to revive Marion Ravenwood's character for the fourth film of Indiana Jones out of all the women involved in the saga?"

Next question:

"Where did you base the original idea for the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?"

I hope he answers any of these! Thanks!!!

How hard was it for you to break into the business, and how many times did you have to pitch your first script before someone even took the time to read it?

When you were writing for "Indiana Jones" did you feel it was important to go back and find some kind of continuity between the older films and this one? Also, if you were asked would you write for the sequel if they were to do one?
Thanks and Amazing Job!~Elle

how where you able to come up with all the action and detailed adventures?

Hi! Thanks for so many hours of entertaiment!

Quick question...

We know that the Indy movies are not intended to be 100% accurate about the context, places and so on...

But how much research did you do about South America, or countries like Peru or "pre-columbian" cultures?

Here, we always have controversy about how Hollywood movies portrait us.

Thanks! ;)

Hi, how long does it take you to write a script?

Is it too late to ask a question? I hope not...
When you're writing, or "designing" a character, do you come up with backstories, or something of the sort beforehand?
And when you're writing a screenplay, have you ever thought about doing something like: I'll just come up with a bunch of characters and base the story around the interactions...? Do you think that doing that is a bad idea?
